Summer is in full swing and it’s a great time to stop and think about one of the primary benefits of professionally installed window film: skin cancer protection. The reports of skin cancer incident affecting the arm of the driver that is most exposed to direct sun are well-known. But did you know that skin cancer can also affect homeowners?
Before we examine this question, here’s some reminders about the prevalence of skin cancer in the United States:
- Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually.
- Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.
- Treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers increased by nearly 77 percent between 1992 and 2006.
- Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined.
Skin cancer affects all skin types and all ethnicities. In fact, while skin cancer rates may be higher for those with lighter skin, the survival rate for those with darker skin is much lower. With that said, many of us are aware that we need to wear skin protection outdoors, like sunscreens and clothing, but what about inside the home?
Unknown to many, it’s just as important in your home. For instance, there are two types of damaging rays, UVA and UVB. The windows in your home filters out the UVB rays, but they can allow up to 50% of the UVA rays to pass right through. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, although UVB rays are less intense, UVA rays are 30 to 50 times more prevalent and are present with relatively equal intensity during all daylight hours throughout the year. Interesting facts, right? As Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation, says “To see the damage that untreated glass can do, take a close look at the furnishings in your home that are hit by direct sunlight. If the sun has faded the color of your sofa, it can just as easily damage your skin when you sit there.”
