Upgrade Your Glass with 3M S2400 Security Window Film

When it comes to enhancing security, the 3M S2400 Security Window Film is a trusted choice. Designed with cutting-edge technology, this film adds a powerful layer of protection to your windows, making them more resistant to impacts and break-ins. Its patented urethane construction and exclusive adhesive hold shattered glass in place, creating a strong barrier against forced entry and flying glass fragments.
Protect Against Break-Ins and Theft
This advanced security film is highly effective in preventing forced entry and smash-and-grab thefts. By reinforcing your windows, it creates a formidable obstacle for intruders, significantly reducing the chances of unauthorized access. With 3M, you can feel confident that your home or business is better protected.
Versatile and Discreet Security
The 3M Security Film is suitable for a variety of settings, including:
- Homes
- Offices and corporate buildings
- Retail stores
- Schools and universities
- Government facilities
It’s ideal for protecting ground-level windows and glass doors without compromising the look of your property.
Unique Construction
3M S2400 Security Window Film System is the next generation of security window film from 3M Company. It is 24 mils (.024”) thick and unlike traditional PET-based window films, 3M S2400 is made of urethane (TPU), which is more flexible than PET and provides substantially greater Elongation at Break (560%). As urethane is more stretchable than PET, it will continue to absorb more energy as it stretches. Like traditional interior applied safety films, S2400 is optically clear and blocks out 99% of the sun’s UV rays.
A New Generation of Security Film
3M S2400 Security Window Film and Impact Protection Adhesive can help prevent unwanted entry, harden school windows, minimize damage caused by spontaneous glass breakage, and turn standard glass into safety glazing.
S2400 is tested to the following standards:
- 16 CFR 1201
- ANSI Z97.1
- UL 972
- ASTM F1233
3M Safety & Security Window Films, such as S2400, are not tested to ASTM F3561-22. Please read 3M’s technical bulletin explaining why.
Comparing Security Window Films: Urethane vs. PET
Comparing TPU to PET is like comparing apples and oranges. That means comparing a urethane to a PET-based film using typical industry characteristics is unrealistic due to the different natures of PET and urethane.
The Old Way
Below is a table of the physical characteristics used most often when comparing safety and security window films.
S2400 | 22-mil PET | Advantage | |
---|---|---|---|
Thickness | .024" | .022" | S2400 |
Maximum Elongation | 560% | 130% | S2400 |
Break Strength | 77 lbs/in | 469 lbs/in | 22-mil PET |
Tensile Strength | 3200 psi | 22,000 psi | 22-mil PET |
As you can see from the table above, it is not feasible to compare a urethane to a PET-based film using typical performance characteristics. That’s because urethane and PET are different materials with different physical properties and characteristics. So, how can you compare urethane and PET films of similar thickness?
The New Way
3M testing shows that a film’s Graves Tear measure is a valid indication of the film’s ability to hold broken glass in place when the glass is exposed to some sort of trauma (forced entry, bomb blast, windstorm, etc). What is being measured by Graves Tear is the force necessary to tear a film at a stress concentration point.
The graph below shows what happens when you elongate (stretch) 3M S2400 and a 22-mil PET-based film. As you stretch the films, the resisting force is measured and recorded. More force is required to break the PET-based film but that film breaks much faster than S2400. The area under both curves is then calculated and compared to determine which film has greater Graves Tear. S2400 has 66% more area under its curve than does the 22-mil PET-based film, thereby allowing S2400 to better absorb energy from an impact.

Summary: Which Film Offers Better Protection?
Graves Tear Results
- S2400 is 24.6lbf*in
- 22-mil is 14.8lbf*in
The primary advantage of urethane-based 3M S2400 Security Window Film is that it will absorb more energy as it stretches than PET-based films of similar thickness. 3M testing shows that this translates into greater protection from broken glass due to various traumas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Security window film is installed on the inside of existing glazing, forming a bond with glass, and helping to hold glass together after impact. The glass, film and frame are held together by an attachment system. Security window film basically works like a car windshield, holding together after repeated blows.
The intended use and construction of a given window film will determine its warranty and life expectancy. The standard warranty range for commercial applications is 10-14 years, and most of our 3M Window Films easily outlast their warranty period.
No security window films are not bullet-proof or bullet-resistant, however, they are shatter-resistant and can protect people and buy time when it matters most. Films are often rated by standards organizations like ANSI / CPSC Z97.1, UL 972, or the GSA TS01.
