Do crime rates change with the seasons?

Do crime rates change with the seasons? It’s a question that has been raised by both homeowners and business customers. There have been some interesting studies produced on the subject of seasonal crime. At ClimatePro, we like to stay on top of the latest information on this subject. Not only are we San Francisco Bay Area residents, but we also offer a number of safety and security products for homes and buildings. This includes products such as our Crimsafe Security Screens and 3M Window Films. Staying on top of the subject of crime rates helps to offer the best security products to our customers, no matter where they live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We all want to live in safe places. Historically, the San Francisco Bay Area has seen crime rates dropping over the past two decades, which is always a good thing. However, studies show that, while there has been a drop in violent crimes, there is still a reason for concern. It has been noted that property theft has continued to be an issue in many cities, and the Bay Area is not exempted from this. A recent example of a San Francisco retail store being burglarized during the COVID-19 shutdown highlights this. The question is this: do property theft and vandalism increase during certain seasons? The answer, based on the statistics, is yes. Why?

Do Crime Rates Increase in Summer Months?

A detailed study by the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics examined the seasonal patterns of various types of crime in the US. This examination of crime victims from 1993 to 2010 had the objective of looking for trends that would indicate increases based on seasonality. The findings indicated that there was an uptick in break-ins. This was especially so for residential homes during summer months, peaking in July and August.

The report gave a few reasons for the uptick of break-ins in summer months. One reason is that increased temperatures can lead to more travel away from home. Also noted is the increase in daylight hours, which can lead to homeowners spending more time away from home. Vacations also happen with greater frequency in the summer, leaving homes unattended for longer periods of time.

Recently, with the COVID-19 epidemic, there have also been growing concerns about commercial burglary. Shops, restaurants, boutiques, and other small businesses are especially vulnerable when there are moments of economic instability. What can homeowners and businesses do to protect themselves, no matter the time of year?

ClimatePro – Your Security & Safety Experts

ClimatePro wants to make sure that our customers have all the resources they need to feel protected and to prevent break-ins. That’s why we offer 3 different types of security and safety products.

Crimsafe is an incredible security window screen product. We’ve already had a ton of interest in this innovative system.  Crimsafe uses a unique Screw-Clamp™ technology that is incredibly strong. The screens are securely screwed into the frame.  When there is an attempted break-in, whether by kicking or by using a tool like a crowbar, Crimsafe is designed to protect your home. It is designed to distribute the impact around the whole frame, thus absorbing it into the structure of the building. Crimsafe offers a level of safety and security that we think many of our customers will find impressive. See a video of it in action here.

Another product that we are proud to offer to our customers is Riot Glass. There are a number of impressive aspects to this product as well. Nearly identical to regular glass but constructed of polycarbonate sheets, Riot Glass is incredibly strong. Not only does it protect you from break-ins, but Riot Glass is also constructed to protect from other threats. These include broken glass from weather events and earthquakes.  See two impressive video of Riot Glass being put to the test here.

Lastly, we offer our tried and true security window film. 3M Ultra Series window film is a tough and tear-resistant film. This highly regarded window film is designed to hold the glass in place, which reduced the potential of flying glass. Like our previously mentioned products, window film can help to prevent both break-ins and injury from severe weather events.
